How To Wear Pajamas 24/7 And Get Away With It (Even At Work)

A word about pajamas as clothes:  I know present-day trends can seem to have the shelf life of a yogurt cup, but pajama dressing isn’t one of them.  It has only been growing in popularity, and before you start balking, just hear me out on this one because I’m not just talking about the most literal interpretations of pajama dressing like the the bold satin set I’m wearing today.  I’m talking all sorts of pajama-inspired styles—draped lapels, piped cuffs, tie-waist silk blazers—the options are endless. We’ve seen PJ-inspired styles everywhere this summer (including on Celine Dion, praise it), but we’ve also seen signals from designers that it will play a big roll in autumn and winter this year, too.  It’s safe to say this style is inching its way out of the trend zone and working toward closet staple status.  Bravo, pajamas, you’ve done well for yourself.

Any time a new style hits our Instagram feeds or saunters past us on the street, we all wonder whether we could “pull it off” or whether it’s really “our style” or not.  First of all, you can pull off anything you want to–own it.  But, second, pajama dressing has way more versatility than you might think.  For example, the look I’m wearing here was perfect for a festive evening event and doesn’t feel wildly out of range for someone who favors colorful, classic, feminine, and even tailored style.  Belt cinching and a graphic floral print keep this look from feeling frumpy, and the right heel and a bold lip make it look event-ready, not couch-prone.

For the office-going crowd, the right pajama set or PJ-inspired suit can be a welcome alternative to the classic pant suit.  Maybe veer away from a dramatic print in canary yellow, but check out a few super chic examples below in solids or sleek stripes, to wear this crazy-comfy look without losing your professional polish.  I mean check out this stunning suit (jacket HERE and pants HERE) and tell me that wouldn’t be a killer look at the office.  Full disclosure, I just ordered it in black and ivory.  (Please pray to the self control gods for me.)

Sometimes all it takes is time and a little repeated exposure to wrap your head around a trend you’ve been iffy about. Especially when it’s a trend that involves wearing a version of clothes typically only seen by your dog and significant other.  But, I hope that time and a few awesome inspirational looks have built up your confidence, because this is a trend you shouldn’t sleep on. (I’m sorry but I can’t NOT hit that pun at least once.)

Collection of lipstick tubes in gold and black including Yves Saint Laurent on grey background for Monday Memo 24
    CLEAR LIPSTICK CAPS

You should be sitting for this one.  Via my friend Lauryn, I recently discovered a company that makes clear plastic caps for popular lipstick brands. How AMAZING is this?!  That perfectly-organized makeup collection (who are we kidding, the 45 random items at the bottom of your bag), just got a lot more functional. These caps let you easily see the color in the tube without checking each color name with a magnifying glass, making locating your chosen color so much easier.  If you really want to go all the way, replace those caps and then organize everything in this clear plastic display (also love this one if you need more room).  For more makeup organization inspo, check out Lauryn’s post here.

    Perfect Fall Coats

Okay…it’s late-ish August, and I’m starting to wrap my head around the idea of Autumn.  Making that effort a lot easier are plenty of fresh-for-2018 options in a clothing category I’ll call “coats that aren’t actually coats.” For example, this Harris Wharf London coziness looks more like a sweater that takes its job seriously, rather than a full-on coat. Also I kind of can’t get over the color of this gorgeous Soia & Kyo piece. Fine, Fall. You may proceed.

    MY FAVORITE WAIST BELTS

My obsession with belts is no secret, and Frame has always been one of my favorite go-to brands. Perhaps you’ve noticed the brown version of this beauty in…I don’t know, a bajillion of my Instagrams? The brand has just released a new spin on this closet classic, and it’s perfect for cinching a dress at the waistline (literally me, always) or wearing with jeans. It comes in black, too!

    Goop Rec:  Inspiring Career Books

I was so excited to get back into the Career Memo swing of things with Career Contessa last week.  If you haven’t had the chance, check it out–we’re chatting about career resources developed for women, by women. But, right after we posted our most recent collab, I also spotted some advice gems on goop, too!  In this post, Gwyneth & Co share seven books and one documentary that will instantly inspire you, especially if you’ve been feeling like you’re in a bit of a career rut.

    Perfect Everlane Tees

I am a champion of the “if you like it, buy it in every color” adage. It’s the best way to avoid shopper’s regret.  I’ve recently learned that I’m 100% in love with Everlane’s Pima Micro Rib Open V-Neck, so naturally all three colors are in my closet, ready to help me with all of my effortless Fall outfit needs.  Can’t get enough of that v detail which somehow makes the simplest jeans and sneakers outfit appear effortlessly chic.

    Amazing Lip Mask

Here’s a fun idea, what if we didn’t get chapped lips this year? Taking better care of my pout the same way I care for my skin is a huge priority going into fall and winter. This year, I’m being proactive and getting into nighttime lip-care, starting with Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask. I like the idea of being able to leave the house without some mildly medicinal lip solution in tow, don’t you?  Believe me, there’s a reason this product as 130K loves on Sephora.

    Ridiculously Delicious One-Pot Chicken Recipe

If you’re going to master a crowd pleasing recipe before summer ends, let it be this one.  I spotted it on Food52 last week and kind of can’t wait to make it again.  It comes together so simply, in literally one pan, and encourages lots of dipping bread in sauce, which is one of my favorite activities.  Go ahead and try this now while tomatoes are awesome and in season—my thinking is it’ll become a staple for anyone who loves hosting friends for dinner.
