In addition to drooling (literally) over the fashion spotted at last week’s CFDA awards and last night’s Tony Awards, this week’s Monday Muse is all about the recently unveiled Resort 2014 collections. The fashion landscape was refreshed with Oscar de la Renta‘s feminine silhouettes, Gucci‘s beachy prints, Rebecca Minkoff‘s florals and much much more. While it’s impossible to pick a favorite among the incredible collections (cough… Erdem… cough), many of the Resort 2014 collections even included pieces that serve up some serious office-ready style inspiration for professional chicks on the go. Check out some of my favorites below…(I promise that little Shel Silverstein rhyming moment at the end was inadvertent.)Happy Monday!
This week’s Monday Muse is the recent amazing piece by Ann Friedman in The Cut which should probably be required reading for all females. As discussed by Friedman, women (and men!) all too often feel needlessly threatened by the success of others. In many cases, they even view those successes as somehow detracting from their own accomplishments. In the inspiring article, Friedman offers up a great alternative to all this lady hatin’ and highlights the fact that in reality, success is not a zero sum game:
When you meet a woman who is intimidatingly witty, stylish, beautiful, and professionally accomplished, befriend her. Surrounding yourself with the best people doesn’t make you look worse by comparison. It makes you better.
Forget the petty competitiveness and celebrate the accomplishments of your friends and colleagues, because there’s room at the top for all of us.
Aside from the Top Ten Cubicle Crimes, there aren’t many universal rules governing professional attire since appropriate dress codes vary widely across different geographic locations and work environments. A lawyer in Milwaukee is likely to dress differently than a teacher in Miami; similarly, an investment banker in New York is probably not going to be following the same dress code as an accountant in Seattle. It’s important to carefully gauge your own office environment and take cues from those around you, especially your superiors… unless any of the aforementioned people in your office happen to don hooker heels, bandage dresses, or bra tops in the office. You probs don’t want to take cues from them. Recently, I’ve received many questions about going sleeveless in the office. In more conservative, formal environments, sleeveless is likely a “no-go.” If this sounds like your workplace, just throw a blazer over the below look or perhaps wear a longer-sleeve blouse. In other offices, including those that are less formal or exist in warmer climates (JEALOUS), sleeveless may be totally acceptable. In this case, you would likely be perfectly appropriate wearing a sleeveless blouse like the one depicted below. The only universal sleeveless rule is that spaghetti (or even fetuccine) straps are a definitive don’t. Regardless of where you work, those suckers really need to be at least two inches thick (and up). Save the spaghetti straps for nights and weekends when you can safely show as much skin as you want without shiz getting real weird in the office.
