The Perfect Fairisle Sweater + Other Gorgeous Knitwear I’m Shopping For Fall

Look, I don’t know why Fair Isle (or Fairisle) sweaters are such a difficult needle to thread (lol fashion jokes), but they are. Since the resurgence of Fair Isle’s popularity over the past few years, I find that designers are often missing the mark when it comes to the balance of color and pattern which makes the sweater I’m wearing today rare, elusive and highly prone to sell out.

Fair Isle, to those unclear, is a knitting technique that creates patterns using multiple colors (like the sweater I’m wearing today), and is named after Fair Isle, one of the Shetland Islands. The Shetland Islands is a subarctic archipelago in the Northern Atlantic, where it gets SUPES COLD and therefore, we can rely on them for expertise in cozy knitwear. NOW THEN, since we’re all informed, let’s talk more about clothes.

The Perfect Fairisle Sweater

Fair Isle is a tough pattern to shop for, because so often the look can veer into territory that looks overly themed. Too much like holiday, too much like you’re shepherding sheep in Scandinavia, etc. There’s an art to it, and thankfully, INTERMIX has truly mastered the art. Here, I’m wearing the Ari Sweater from the brand’s own exclusive INTERMIX label. This wool-blend sweater with ribbed crewneck, cuffs, and hem is cozy, comfy, and incredibly stylish. The use of a delicate pattern in gold and silver against cream is what keeps it from feeling too themed. The softness of the overall look keeps it wearable. It’s everything I want Fair Isle to be, and very rarely find.

Fair Isle sweaters, when done well, are wearable with a variety of looks. And here I’ve opted to keep things casual. My pants are an A.L.C. tapered trouser, my shoes are an essential pair of Veja low tops, and a cool crystal hoop earring elevates the entire look.
