Today, I’m wearing a shearling coat by Rag & Bone that I found at Nordstrom with a cropped cut to balance the sweetness of my sweater a bit. Below you’ll find many more shearling options along with gorgeous wool coats, puffer coats, leather jackets, and (perhaps my favorite of all) quilted coats. The five major food groups when it comes to outerwear.
P.S. I know we’re focused on outerwear today but my leather pants are extremely worth checking out. I’ve been on the hunter for the perfect pair of high-waisted, straight-leg leather pants for approximately three years and this season, Agolde came through. The fit and style is DIVINE and the price point is great for the quality.
Notice that I’m using the word shearling and not teddy. Teddy had a moment, I’ll give it that, but there was a highly casual, almost pajama-esque nature to the style that didn’t lend itself well to more polished points of view. Shearling, however, HOLD ME. You’ll most often find shearling making visible appearances at the cuffs and collars, with the rest of its hard work happening inside the lining of your outerwear. Feels like you’re swaddled inside a toasted marshmallow.
Always a heavy hitter when it comes to both warmth and precipitation protection, I love a puffer for high-energy days with a million things to do when freezing to death is not on the list of errands. You can opt for a cropped jacket for a sportier effect, or longer versions with belts or darts at the waist to give the coat shape.
Your essential workday or night-out coat in winter when a puffer or shearling would feel too casual and out of place. A classic wool coat is an investment that will last you a lifetime when you commit to caring for them. There are so many options, from classic peacoat shapes to oversized collar/wrap moments—no need for boredom here.
The running theme with all of these coats is timelessness, and leather coats are no exception. They’re another highly reliable investment you make once and return to year after year. Here, you’ll want your focus to be fit, as an ill-fitting leather coat is tough to mask, and easy to spot.
And now for my personal favorite this season: quilted coats. Quilted coats and puffers are often lumped together, but a puffer is generally going to have more volume with thick horizontal lines, where quilted coats will have less bulk and a smaller-scale often cross-hatched quilting pattern. Quilted coats can also offer maximum warmth with minimal volume, and you’ll always be glad you have an option or two ready when you need them. They’re especially great when a wool cloth coat doesn’t feel like enough but a puffer feels too intense.

If you’re here for the coats, skip on down to my hit list at the bottom of this post. Before I get there, however, we must discuss what I’m wearing under this dreamy coat—this little black dress extraordinaire by Halston. Where to start with this dress? Perhaps I should begin by saying I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about a little black dress purchase. This sweater dress is ideal for so many reasons. I recently wore a black dress with a similar neckline to my cousin’s wedding and it quickly sold out (much to everyone in my DMs’ dismay). This wide, off-the-shoulder v-neckline is one of the most flattering (and slimming) necklines of all time, so I’ve been on the hunt for a similar style and ladies and gents, I FOUND IT. It’s the Jolie Off-The-Shoulder Dress by Halston, and it’s a stunner.
A feature of this dress that I absolutely love is that the neckline is totally adjustable. You can wear it pulled down far off the shoulder or you can wear it up over your shoulder so it looks more like a v-neck sweater dress. The twist at the bust line connects to the fold-over neckline in a way that allows you to adjust the neckline with ease which is no easy feat when it comes to dress construction. They absolutely nailed it with this one, so yes, I am 100% going back for it in ivory.
The fabric is a thick, substantial knit — not to the point that it feels like shapewewar, but it’s got much more heft than your typical sweater dress that clings to every bulge or underwear line. In terms of sizing, it runs true to size and I like that it’s not super skin-tight. It’s meant to have a little room. I’m 5’10” and wearing a size medium, for reference.

And now for the coat! The coat! First off, let me just tell you that it was not easy to choose a color. I also see that the same style is now available in a black and white version. DREAMY. Aside from this Cinq A Sept houndstooth coat being one of the most beautiful, refreshing styles I’ve seen in a long time, its construction is exceptionally thoughtful. In particular, I find the knit sleeves to be genius. Yes, they just… look cool. But, if you think about your typical wool coats, it’s often the rigid sleeve that makes you feel the most constricted. That uncomfortable tightness you feel when you reach or move comes from having thick non-stretch wool fabric through the shoulder and sleeve. With this coat, you have the warmth and utility of a coat, but the comfort of a vest. Standing ovation.
