DRESS/COAT: BCBG | LEGGINGS: Hue (also similar here and here) | TURTLENECK: Majestic | BOOTS: Stuart Weitzman | GLOVES: Coach (old but similar here) | BAG: Sophie Hulme (also here) | Earrings: Baublebar

For a momentary step outside of my typical workwear line-up, I thought I’d share a couple looks from New York Fashion Week. Today, I’m sharing the ensemble I wore to the BCBG show last Thursday morning. This white and black fringed piece is actually a dress, but I wore it more as a coat with a black turtleneck (plus a few other concealed cold-weather layers because I’m not a masochist) and leggings. The leggings could easily be replaced with a pencil skirt or black trousers if you wanted to sport it in a formal professional setting. Personally, I’d really like to see Olivia Pope make this dress happen. I feel like she could verbally assault someone and then punctuate a fabulous one-liner with a little whipping-action fringe to the face. Just a thought.

I LOVE this look! It is so fun and edgy! Those Stuart Weitzman boots are just amazing. Maybe by next winter I can buy a pair to strut. Thank you for the wonderful fashion inspiration. I hope you’ve had fun at Fashion Week. Stay warm!

Beautiful! The fringe BCBG coat/dress is a statement piece. I like how you paired it with classic red lipstick, the black turtleneck and the hue leggings that are not wet look. I have two of those pleather pencil skirts and save it for night time, but I almost never wear them bec. it became too mainstream. I’m not a fan of that pleather/leather look in day time, it’s too nightclub/sexy.
What I like about the coat…the ivory color is classy and the contrast of black is sharp and classic, the fringe gives it edge w/out biker chick, and the cut is regal something Princess Kate would wear with a broach.
The over-the-knee boot compliments the fringe. And the long strap small square purse adds that balance of lady-like femininity. The fitted black leather gloves also add that lady-like quality that I feel is your signature. There’s a prissiness (to me that’s a compliment) tempered with edge to this look.
Lordy, woman, you are rockin’ that outfit. You are so much better than the runway models. Seriously, it is the most stunning thing you’ve presented to us so far. And it has had serious competition in the past. Love it exactly as you’ve styled it but of course would need some adjustment to wear to work. BTW, I agree with Benchwarmer…..you always present yourself in a ladylike way. Even if wearing jeans or leggings, there is no doubt about your idea of class.
Also, congratulations on your new affiliation with Chico. Add that to Ann Taylor, Boden, J. Crew….those brands couldn’t have teamed with a better representative.
Mary,
I’m head over heels with this look!! You look so chic and put together. I would have never thought to layer the turtleneck underneath and wear it as a coat. I would love to wear this to the office and would love to see how you would pair this look with a pencil skirt or pants. Would you tuck the dress into the pencil skirt?
Best,
Jen

Not to speak for Mary here, but I interpreted it as the pencil skirt is a lower layer like the leggings, peeking out the bottom of the dress/coat, not tucking in the dress into a skirt. I think if you go that route it should be a very fitted slim, second skin type pencil skirt similar to the weight of the hue leggings so it doesn’t overpower the already powerful/statement dress. And I would do only one inch longer than the coat/dress so it doesn’t smother the focus which you want to limit to the coat/dress. Honestly I think it looks best with black tights or the slim leggings and not with a pencil as long as it doesn’t reveal too much leg. I have a feeling Mary is tall so there is a lot more leg that is visible but if someone like me who is 5″ it would hit me much lower that a pencil would be redundant.
Well said! I agree on all counts. A pencil skirt or pair of pants would definitely be best worn under the dress. And, you’re also correct about my height. I’m 5’10” so there’s a lot more leg revealed than most. XO
This whole outfit is rockin’! It’s chic, but has some flair…I love it! I especially love those boots–they have such a great silhouette.

You look amazing! Funny that you referenced Olivia Pope because I could totally see this look on her. I love those over the knee boots and that fringed dress is perfection.

I absolutely LOVE this look! I’m not sold on the fringe yet {though it would be fun!}, but the hemline on the dress is amazing! I hope that they use it on other pieces – would be perfect for a work event in my business.

Mary, I would love to see a post on your “layering” items that we never see. For example, your go-to brands for camisoles, tights, layering tees, turtlenecks, etc. I live in a cold-weather area and find myself frequently turning to layers for warmth. In the summer, I turn to camisoles for modesty and professionalism. However, I consistently struggle with finding brands with the right fit/material to lay correctly under clothing without bunching up or causing the top layers to “catch.”
