Headbands
Arguably my current favorite hair-saving hero, headbands are the ultimate distraction from otherwise-untamed (or greasy!) locks. As I begin preparing for life with a newborn, I know I will have even less time to get ready in the morning. I am delighted that headbands have made a major sartorial comeback, embellishments and all. I do see how a headband can evoke thoughts of youthfulness. Our moms were all too keen to just toss our hair in one of these and let us scoot out the door to school (something I fully plan on doing to my daughter). But it’s the rest of your look (as an actual grown up) that ensures a headband looks current—and also cool.

Barrettes
Another hair accessory I collected with fervor as a kid, barrettes have very much grown up. I’ve discovered that they can be embellished with pearls and other stunningly sophisticated accoutrements. This is pretty great news for our hair, my friends. Apart from the logistical joys of having your hair corralled away from your face when so desired, barrettes are one of the most charming ways to accessorize a look. Their variety is endless, which is why maybe they lend themselves so much to trend. But don’t sleep on the classic versions—you’ll always be happy you have them in a pinch.

Hair Clips (Aka Embellished Bobby Pins)
If you’re going to wear visible bobby pins in your hair (and you should), make sure it’s an embellished one. This is a golden opportunity to accessorize a look with just a touch of awesome. I suggest you invest in some versatile and classic hair pins that don’t hide from the spotlight.

Scrunchies (Especially Ones With Bows!)
Welp, that scrunchie renaissance sure came out of nowhere, didn’t it? And, while I’m all for a good revisit of beloved hair accessories past, I have to show particular favoritism towards the bow-topped scrunchie. The bow accent makes your ponytail feel intentional, rather than just what was leftover after a workout. I love hair accessories for adding a purposeful punch to a look. Scrunchies of all kinds (but especially those with bows) are one of my favorite ways to accomplish that. Also the word scrunchie is simply a fun word to say.

Hair Bows
Scrunchie or no scrunchie, who doesn’t love a hair bow? Try being in a bad mood in a hair bow, I dare you. While I’d argue that all chic hair accessories have mood-lifting abilities, hair bows take the cake. And then they take your strands and make them Instagram-worthy. And while I have been known to take this a little too Paul Revere-style with a low pony, I do fully support all of us keeping ribbons and bows on hand. They add a bit of playful polish to our favorite casual looks.

Metallic Ponytail Covers
Similar to situations where we use scrunchies with bows, sometimes we want to wear a ponytail but—if possible—it needs to be an elevated or professional one. Metallic ponytail covers are your magic ticket to chic ponies, instantly adding polish. Not entirely unlike wearing hair jewelry, these accessories are simply one of the smartest investments you can make for your professional wardrobe. Yes, your hair is part of your professional wardrobe. And, when wash day didn’t quite happen or the weather makes the idea of hair actually touching your shoulders during your AM commute sound nightmarish, one of these guys is your follicular friend.
