Happy Friday! In honor of everyone’s favorite day of the workweek and Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I thought I’d share a little day-to-night action today featuring my favorite double-breasted glen plaid blazer and new favorite strappy black cocktail dress.
As discussed in many past day-to-night posts (most recently here and here), my favorite desk-to-drinks trick is to find a dress with a nice work-friendly length that has festive back or shoulder detailing which can easily be obscured by a sweater or blazer during the day.
Often, there’s little time after work to go home and change into what you might ideally wear to drinks or your date, and changing into your LBD in the bathroom at the office before heading out the door still leaves you open to the risk of an awkward elevator ride with superiors who may raise an eyebrow (warranted or not) at your scantily-clad après-work self.
With this get-up, there’s no changing required. You can easily ditch the blazer upon departure from the office, throw on a bright red lip, and be good to go for whatever the evening may bring.
Look 1 & 2: DRESS: Dress the Population (short version here) | JACKET: c/o Reiss (similar HERE & HERE) | SHOES: Saint Laurent (similar HERE, HERE and HERE) | BAG: M2Malletier | SUNGLASSES: Miu Miu c/o DITTO | LIP: Make Up For Ever (28) & Giorgio Armani (400)

Since Valentine’s Day falls next Sunday while I’ll be at fashion week in NYC, Rich and I are celebrating a little early this week and I look forward to getting some good use out of this amazing dress. If you’re looking for some other good Valentine’s Day options or desk-to-drinks dresses like this one, check out my picks below!

Cool idea! But can you resist 8 hours at the office in that jacket? it seems a little to stiff. maybe a cardigan would have solved the problem easier.
I totally agree. A richly colored cardigan (buttoned to the neck) would be a comfortable solution to desk sitting and then pop on the jacket for meetings. Gosh I wish this dress hadn’t sold out sizes so quickly. Awesome pick by Mary!
Love that dress, thanks for posting the link for the shorter version!

Girl, you are rocking that dress! And the price is reasonable. I absolutely love the blazer in the longer length but sold out in all but size 8. 🙁 Have a great weekend and early valentine’s day.
Oh my, now this is what I consider to be a perfect LBD!! You look breathtaking!
