You get a sweater! You get a sweater! Everyone gets a sweater! Pour your cocoa, light a fire in the fireplace (sorry, make someone else light a fire in the fireplace you’re busy shopping), and get cozy—it’s SWEATER SEASON!  First instinct is always to dig into last year’s box of sweaters that you carefully (lol) packed away last season.  But opening that box isn’t always the Christmas morning moment we want it to be.  That’s because trends change, tastes change, and…you know, we like new stuff.  Even some of those classic favorites are pilled and stretched out beyond repair, so it’s time to refresh, okay?

There are plenty of sweater standouts this year, so many that I think a bookmarkable resource is a good/necessary idea. Below, the shortlist of my absolute must-haves for this fall and winter:

1 //  The Cashmere Crew Neck

Okay, maybe this is a must-have every year, but I am seeing a lot of colorful, conveniently marked-down cashmere crews this year. Don’t look a gift garment in the mouth—get moving.

2 //  The Layering Turtleneck

Turtleneck Nation, I salute you!  Personally, I like to feel my sweaters from the chin-down.  This year tissue-thin layering turtlenecks are having just as much of a moment as their meatier cousins, so you’ll always have the perfect layering weight for outfits, moods, and degrees fahrenheit.

3 //  The Fair Isle

If you say this sweater doesn’t make you want to yodle on a mountaintop, you’re lying.  The way to keep this one winter-chic rather than chalet-kitsch, is by finding a pattern that feels like “you.” Choose colors and shades that feel comfortable, not costume-y, and get cozy.

4 //  The Oversized Chunky

Pictured here in a purple shade that Zara was SIMPLY TAUNTING ME WITH FROM A WINDOW, the oversized chunky sweater is one of my favorites. It’s the kind of throw-on-and-go piece that you wear for fall and winter’s most-fun activities, when you want to be super comfortable and living (read: eating your face off?) in the moment. I think you should live those moments in shades of purple, but that’s just me.

5 //  The Sweater Dress

Is it a sweater?  Is it a dress?  Is it an adult swaddle?  Who cares, it’s comfy.  The sweater dress-tights-boots combination is timeless fashion math.  Don’t argue with tradition, just go forth in coziness, my friends. 

6 //  Statement Sleeves

Weeeeeee!  I’m excited for this one.  Puffy, textured, downright showstopping—sleeves are not coming quietly this season.  Pull one out when you’re feeling like cold weather dressing is getting dull.  They’ll perk up you and the pair of jeans you can’t stop wearing because they’re thick enough to keep your legs from becoming icicles with a pedicure.

7 //  Cardigans

Classic, and sometimes collegiate, the cardigan is one of the most timeless of the crew, and there’s a reason for that.  They go with everything, they’re classic, they’re ready and waiting for the moment you feel a tad chilly.  Feeling frosty?  Swoosh a cardigan around yourself and Netflix the chill away.  Need a power outfit?  The cardigan steps in when your blazers are afraid to go outside.  Make sure yours are in good working order.
